Not one person has taken anyone other than Hanley Ramirez, A-Rod and Albert Pujols with the first overall pick in the last 347 drafts at Mock Draft Central. All three are great players, but what about Jose Reyes? His ADP is 4.40 yet no one’s taken him first overall.
Of the top three players, Hanley compares best with Reyes since they were born a year apart and they play the same position, but there’s a wide gap between the two shortstops.
Sure, Reyes should steal 20-25 more bases, but Hanley’s hit at least twice as many homers as Reyes each of the last two years and he drives in and scores more runs. Consider Ramirez’s 20 point advantage in career batting average and it becomes apparent that he’s the one to choose.
The mock drafters have been right to choose Hanley first; in fact there’s a considerable gap between the value you’ll see picking third and what remains just one slot later.
